Breast reconstruction after mastectomy with a natural fat transfer

With recent advances in fat grafting techniques, it is now possible to reconstruct a breast following mastectomy with your own fat tissue. Fat transfer is performed by harvesting fat in the same way that liposuction is performed. Fat is usually harvested from the abdomen, flanks or thighs, resulting in improved contour to the body. This procedure uses natural fat, collagen, and proteins that improve the texture, pliability, and health of the skin.

With the evolution of breast reconstruction following mastectomy, we have been using an absorbable mesh scaffold (bio-mesh) and the patient's own tissue.

The tissues surrounding the mesh grow into the scaffold, which can then be injected with the patient’s own fat tissue. Often sufficient tissue can be generated to enable us to do away with breast implants for breast reconstruction.

Dr. Becker is a pioneer in fat harvesting techniques having developed several instruments currently used in this procedure. He has now combined techniques developed in the United States and Europe to offer the patient breast reconstruction using their own fat. Fat is harvested during a liposuction procedure.

Now that it is possible to save all the skin and even the nipples following mastectomy, breast reconstruction is more successful than ever.

Results are similar to patients undergoing cosmetic breast procedures. The result is a soft, natural feeling breast.
